What is a puppy mill? If you have purchased a dog online, in a pet store or at a farm you have most likely subsidized them without even knowing they existed in the first place. There is a reason why you don’t know about them. Puppy mills are mass breeding farms for dogs. You will never see the parents of the puppies that come from the mills. Many people are unaware of the torturous lives endured by the parents of the puppies that consumers buy in stores, online or elsewhere. The cute puppy in the window comes from a background that only can be described as horrific. The worst part of it all is that…
Puppy mills are completely legal.
Dogs spend their entire lives in cages crammed together with no shelter from the elements. They acquire matted, filthy hair; their teeth and jaws rot. Many lose their feet and legs by getting caught in wire cage floors. They freeze in the winter or cook on the cage wire in the summer.
Puppy mills create these inhumane conditions for their purpose of constant breeding of unhealthy and injured dogs. Young female dogs are bred immediately and every cycle until their bodies can no longer reproduce. They are often killed by being bashed in the head with a rock, or shot. Sometimes they are sold to laboratories or dumped by the time they are only five years old. These animals are purely there for profit, there is no regard for their well-being in any capacity other than to reproduce. If you have your own dog or have spent any time with animals, you know they feel deeply. Imagine if an animal you love were left outside in a cage–cramped so tightly they could barely move, in freezing or scalding temperatures for years until they died from exposure or were killed when they were no longer considered useful. When you buy a puppy from a pet store, online or a farm, you are most likely helping to facilitate the cycle for the fate of those animals. What you see happen to the people in the film, is what happens to the animals in the mills.
You can help to end the cycle, and here is how– ADOPT; do not shop, for your next companion animal. Do not buy a dog at a pet store or online. There are millions of dogs, including purebreds, currently in shelters and foster homes all over the world that need to find their forever home. Approximately every year over 3 million dogs who need homes are euthanized.
If you know of any pending legislation that will help end puppy mills, send it to us and we will post it here and help spread the word. Ultimately though the difference will begin and end with you, the consumer. If the demand goes down for these puppies, the supply will end. They are waiting.
